The Story of Frankenstein (long overdue)
I’ve had better luck at yard sales than thrift stores. The Salvation Army has been a constant source of awesome t-shirts for me over the years, and recently I did pick up some stereo equipment for a total of 25 big ones.
I will have to tell you the story of Frankenstein. You have to see it to believe it, I was coming home from the gym and saw a sign for a yard sale. I had a feeling there would be something good there so I went for it, took all the side roads to eventually find it. There it was: an incredible 70s cabinet style stereo, with 3 towers…1st tower a record player…then the stereo receiver / radio…then the 2 speakers below…
It had a piece of tape that said 300 on it. I couldn’t imagine it cost 300 dollars. And definitely not 3 dollars. So I asked the old man how much he wanted for the stereo, he was playing a Boots Randolph record on it, the “Benny Hill theme song” apparently. He said “The price is right here, 3 dollars please…but I’d like to keep this record and this obituary I cut out for Boots Randolph.
He hands me the obituary, I read it. Boots Randolph. So I give it back, run down the hill, fold the seat not down, but back, on my 1997 Toyota Tercel (smallest car in the world) and somehow magically get the stereo thing-a-ma-bob into my car. I dubbed this incredible monster “Frankenstein” on the spot. My friend Mike saw me wheel it out of my room for a party and asked me “What the hell is that” and I simply replied “…this is Frankenstein…”.
3 dollars. I paid 6 dollars at best buy for a cable for Frankenstein, I managed to hook my iPod up to it. Greatest deal I’ve ever got, and in my opinion, a pretty good story to boot.
