Yo, the things I’m seein’ on the news is insane
A stock broker shoot his kid and throw himself in front of a train
A mother leave her baby home for two weeks all by himself
Three years old, eatin’ ketchup and mustard, cryin for help
Tryin’ to bring your struggle to life
The label want a song about a bubbly life
I have trouble tryin’ to write some shit
To BANG in the club through the night
When people suffer tonight
Lord knows I try

-Talib Kweli & Mary J Blige, “I Try”, live in Sydney, NSW, Australia

?? of 365: Thank you Park City TV, thank you Sundance Film Festival, here is Sara Bareilles, a dude playing guitar, and a dude sitting on a wooden box with one brush in hand performing “Love Song”.  And maybe you’re thinking “why the eff is this on here”. Well…on top of this being a really well written and well performed song, I love the story, assuming the story is true.  And as I write this, I need to put up another video…here’s the story.

Apparently Sara’s label, Epic, requested that she write a “marketable love song” for the album.  So basically she got pissed at her record label and wrote “Love Song”.  Listen to the words from that perspective and it changes the meaning quite a bit.  The part that gets me is that the result of her emotion produced such a great song, the song that proved to make her most marketable.  Anger and honesty producing big results.  And my friends call *me* Surly… =)

?? of 365: For the most part, live rap sounds atrocious on a big stage setting.  So I’m compromising a little here by putting up Kanye’s performance of “Heartless” at the AMA’s.  Big ups to the AMAs and to Kanye.  I missed Kanye at Bonnaroo at 08 but I heard what happened from some of the peeps I went to 07 with.  Hey, I’ve missed shows too.  On tour we decided it would be great to stop for lunch in Chicago on the way to Ann Arbor.  But the storm was bad and we missed the gig.  We could have got a lot of negativity but we got a lot a lot of love instead.  We hung out, feasted on the same burritos that Michigan students eat and quenched our thirst with the finest Mad Dog 20 20.  After resting on a stranger’s floor, we got back in the van, drove down with that whole crew down to Toledo and put on one hell of a show.  Not to mention Johnny Pueblo (a little inside, I know).
